It has been discovered that the British Governments Department for Exiting the EU (DExEU) have spent £10,000 on ‘Politico Pro’ subscriptions as a way to gather Political news and intelligence.
Politico-Pro is a ‘customizable policy intelligence platform’ service targetted at Politicians and everyone else who works in front line politics, making use of Politico’s global network of Political Journalists to provide up to the minute political reporting and analysis.
The discovered Tender details show that DExEU had previously subscribed to the Politico Pro service (December 2017) but had not gone through a tender process, leading to a retroactive submission of said tender in June 2018. The Contract between DExEU and Politico Pro is for a 10 user subscription and was for 1 year. It is unknown as of yet whether DExEU is still subscribing to this service.
A Spokesperson for The Department of Exiting the EU told ABZ that “DExEU’s Politico Pro subscription is used by our staff on a daily basis” “It is necessary for us to be aware of public views and opinions in Brussels and beyond and subscriptions to specialist media outlets are one way we do this.”
The use of Private news services by Government, for reporting and intelligence, is not a new concept. At this important period in British Geopolitics, it could be said that obtaining intelligence from news services in this manner could lead to an imbalance of views or Ministers being fed ‘bad intelligence’.
(In my Opinion, it was probably a waste of £10k, as DExEU do not seem to be showing ANY ‘intelligence’!)
